Branch Rickey wanted to hire an African American player so he chose Jackie Robinson. In the major leagues, Jackie played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Branch Rickey knew he needed someone who would be able to remain calm when the fans and people were being mean to him. Jackie agreed to this and he was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Things Start to Change
Treatment by Fans
The fans treated Jackie Robinson mean by throwing things at him. The players were also using their cleats to spike him just because he was black. This was not fair. Jackie Robinson was a great athlete and he never fought back when the people were being mean to him.
Pee Wee Reese became friends with Jackie Robinson and they were very good friends. The fans changed how they treated him when they saw that Reese respected Robinson and they respected each other. Pee Wee Reese played the short stop and he made it very clear that he was on Robinson’s side. Robinson respected Pee Wee Reese for that, even though Pee Wee Reese was white and Robinson was black. When Pee Wee Reese went by Robinson’s side the fan’s respected them because they saw a white person and a black person were by each other’s side. The fans realized they should respect Robinson just like they respect themselves.
